Korean Venture Capital Poured into Vietnam

According to Adjust’s Mobile Growth Map – a mobile market research company, Vietnam is the fastest growing application market that keeps Internet users.

In 2017, Korean President Moon Jae-in announced a new policy aimed at strengthening the relationship between Korea and ASEAN. These policies have boosted the dynamism of Korean companies to Southeast Asian business.

More and more companies in every field aim to Southeast Asia. Many of them, are venture capitalists.

Over the past two years, Southeast Asian technology companies have signed numerous agreements involving Korean investors, such as the 50 million USD investment in Bukalapak e-commerce company of Mirae Asset-Naver Growth Fund, seed sponsorship deals for real estate startups from BonAngels Venture Partners and Kakao Ventures.

In addition to trade and real estate, Korean venture capital funds have poured money into almost every other important area of Southeast Asia including fintech (KIP’s investment in C88 in Singapore), car (SoftBank Ventures Korea in Singapore by Carro), travel (BonAngels and Nextrans in Vietnam) and logistics (Nextrans and FuturePlay into EcoTruck Vietnam).

In recent years, Korean venture capital companies have also established joint funds with partners in Southeast Asia to target startups in the region, including a cooperation fund worth 87 million USD of Korean Investment Partners with Golden Equator, the 100 million USD cooperation fund of Intervest and Kejora Ventures. The bigger ones are Hanwha Asset Management and Golden Gate Ventures with 200 million USD fund and most recently the investment fund of about 100 million USD of KB Investment and MDI Ventures.

In 2017, Southeast Asia’s private capital and venture capital surpassed Europe for the first time, with the amount of 23.5 billion USD invested in this area, nearly three times higher than in 2016, according to data from Singapore Venture Capital & Equity Association

(SVCA). Investments in startups doubles to 8 billion USD. In 2018, Alibaba invested an additional of 2 billion USD in Lazada while Indonesia’s Gojek closed the 1.5 billion USD funding round.

Korean investors pay special attention to Indonesia and Vietnam. According to the Vietnam Technology Investment Report of Cento Ventures and ESP Capital, 13 of 61 venture capital funds operating in Vietnam in the first half of 2019 are Korea.

According to Adjust’s Mobile Growth Map – a mobile market research company, Vietnam is the fastest growing application market that keeps Internet users.

One of the reasons is that Vietnam is the market with the largest potential for internet growth worldwide.

That’s why so many businesses come to this region, and so many acquirers are actively looking for Southeast Asian companies. Silicon Valley giants like Google and competitors are beginning to look more seriously at Southeast Asian companies as an investment and acquisition opportunity.

Sustainable development in Vietnam

The sustainable development objectives including economic, social development and environment protection have been integrated into national priority development together with economic growth objective.

With a stable GDP and economic growth, improvement of education, Vietnamese citizens have gained more knowledge about gender quality, environmental and other social issues, thus, creating campaigns to support collective action. For example, the campaign collecting garbage along beaches in Vietnam attracted more than 1000 students to participate in which indicated collective action to mitigate effect of disaster and climate change.

Vietnamese government has significantly improved the rate of hunger eradication, poverty reduction, population, job creation, education and healthcare. Particularly, in 2014, total state budget for hunger eradication and poverty reduction were more than 34 billion VND. Thus, the poverty rate took a nosedive from 14.2% in 2010 to 1.8-2% in 2014, proving average reduction of 2% per year national wide.

The state fund for environmental protection has been increased, thus the policies for environmental protection has put into regular operation. By executing tax exemption for environmental friendly enterprises, businesses in Vietnam have been more aware of coordinating environmental protection policies into long term vision and mission.

Vietnam takes part in international agreement to show commitment to sustainable development such as: WTO, United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change, United Nation Convention to combat desertification, the convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora…

Challenges of sustainable development in Vietnam

There have been some challenges in Vietnam when implementing sustainable development policies. An increase in natural disaster, degenerated natural resource (water and biodiversity resources), wasteful and ineffective production and consumption are causing huge destruction to various local communities.

Even though there have been some supporting policies for enterprises in Vietnam to implement sustainable development policies, they have not obtained full awareness of the link between good environmental, social, and governance performance and the ability of companies to be profitable and survive in turbulent times. Therefore, most of the firms succeeded in promoting sustainable development practices are international businesses.

Sustainable development in business

Since Vietnam takes part in international trade agreements, there will be more international and institutional investors need the information of material environmental, social and governance information about company performance to decide whether to make investment decision.

Sustainable development of the business should be proven by social factors (employee compensation, benefits, staff turnover, safety practices, diversity and local community) and environmental factors (energy efficiency, GHS emissions, biodiversity conservation, water usage, natural resource use, waste to energy and recycling practices). These factors are crucial for investors as they indicates how the company takes into account risks, opportunities, management approach, stakeholder value and long term development.

Sustainability report has been strongly recommended by Vietnamese government. Vietnam Brewery Ltd is one of a few leading companies taking this report seriously. Their report in 2014 stated that the company switched from diesel to biomass as boiler fuel, reducing direct CO2 emissions as a result. In addition to reducing our carbon footprint and mitigating the effects of global warming, the local community has also benefited from the programme with an additional income from the sale of rice husks. The company also highlighted the code of conduct which allowed the employees to voice their opinions. There have been also other big cooperation taking part in the trend for example Bao Viet Corporation, Vinamilk, Hau Giang Pharmacy…

In conclusion, in order for enterprises in Vietnam to actively engage in sustainable development and voluntarily adopt sustainability as common practice, Vietnamese government should take more urgent actions.

Simplifying the Procedure for Foreigner to Reside in Vietnam

For foreigners wishing to come to Vietnam to work and reside temporarily, they need to either set-up a company in Vietnam or work for others. The owner of the company does not need a work permit but still needs to apply for a temporary residence card.

However, the foreign employee will need the employer to sponsor the work permit in Vietnam before applying for a temporary residence card. A recent draft law on entry, exit and residence of foreigner in Vietnam has been proposed with some changes. The draft regulates many open provisions on entry-exit procedure, temporary and permanent residence conditions for foreigners to reside in Vietnam. ANT Lawyers always follows the new updates about administrative procedures in Vietnam to provide our client with the best service.

The new draft law details conditions for granting the temporary residence card for foreigners working in Vietnam, raising the term of this card from 3 year to 5 year. The foreigners’ category expands to scientists and specialists residing in Vietnam for the purpose of attracting international talents, the foreigners who don’t have any type of document proving nationality, and have resided in Vietnam before the year 2000. The foreigners holding temporary residence cards must change cards periodically 10 years at the issuing offices. The draft law does not allow the foreigners to change the entry purpose, but allows them to supplement the purpose of belonging persons in some specific cases such as in terms of diplomatic representative offices, consulates, international representative offices of the United Nations and students at universities, colleges, schools.

For more information or requirements of legal services to obtain a temporary residence card in Vietnam, we could assist.

Students learn how to start up business

HCMC - Corporate executives pointed out at a business seminar in HCMC on Monday that feasible ideas and the daring will be among the important factors students should possess if they want to set up their own businesses and develop their personal brands after graduation.

Duong Thu Huong, director of public relations and operations at IDG Ventures Vietnam, asked more than 200 students at the seminar to identify what they would want based on their ideas and then try their best to make it a reality.

Nguyen Minh Triet, chief executive officer of Strategy Asia Group, shared Huong’s view, saying that business start-up was to start a journey. “You must select a direction and make every effort to achieve the targets you set for the journey,” Triet told participating students at the “Building a Corporate Career: Developing Personal Brand and Leadership in a Big Game” session of the “Re-Invest Yourself” seminar.

Triet said a company should have a clear development strategy and targets. “Different approaches are needed to reach different goals,” he said and advised young people to set up businesses in the fields where they have experience and know-how to gain a certain advantage.

Huong of IDG Ventures Vietnam warned business start-up was not an easy job because young people were required to have practical ideas appropriate for their personal capacities.

However, she said that many opportunities were awaiting youths to set up new businesses and investment funds were also ready to help translate their business ideas into reality.

Huong told the Daily that IDG Ventures Vietnam would invest in new feasible business ideas and the investment capital would depend on the scale of the project.

Triet of Strategy Asia Group said failure was common when doing business but stressed the lessons from this failure was what that mattered most for successful business people. “Failure is necessary for us to achieve success.”

Nguyen Cong Ai, director of tax and corporate services at KPMG Vietnam, said failure drew people to reality and helped them work harder to get more success. “The biggest failure in life is that we do nothing when we fail,” Ai told the seminar.

Triet of Strategy Asia Group said personal brand development was like building a company. “We must have a proper strategy and set the target to achieve.”
